Visual representations of The Outsiders and Strictly Ballroom.

These are samples of a huge range of Static Images completed by Ms Metcalfe's Level One English classes. This is an assessment for NCEA that is worth 3 credits.

The task is to convey through the image a selected theme from a studied text.
One class completed their images based on the classic novel The Outsiders written by S.E. Hinton. The other class completed theirs on the film Strictly Ballroom directed by the well-known Australian director Baz Luhrman.
Both of these texts were literature studies that will be formally assessed externally at the end of the year.

The students showed a perceptive understanding of the texts and we were really proud of the results.

The standard does not require a high level of artistic ability, as this is not what is assessed. What is important is the complexity of the ideas shown, and development of their image to convey their understanding.

The students used a variety of techniques such as collage, drawing, photocopying to express their understanding of the texts. They must also take into account the visual language considerations such as layout, colour, symbolism and font.

All of these combine to make the delightful images that you can see here.

Work shown form :- Joel Herbert, Steven Tuitavake, Nuku Havea, Eddie Tini, Sia Koloamatangi, Harley Tawhai, Tere Charlie.
